My Journey into Child and Youth Care Practitioner
I am currently completing my second semester in the CYCP program. Growing up my mother and sister were both in the CYCP field which gave me a peek at this career. It was something I was always passionate about, but I never fully believed in myself. That changed when I met a CYCP in the field who helped me realize that I already do this work daily with the child at the local farm I volunteer at. That conversation gave me the confidence to make the decision to pursue this career.
My Values
Some of the values I have are empathy, advocacy, inclusivity and patience. I truly believe that in order to meet youth where they are at and build relationships with them we must start with empathy and patience. Everything takes time, and I believe that being an active listener and respecting the people you work with will get you further then trying to rush thing. Every young person has their own needs, experiences, and beliefs and its important to respect that. I am an compassionate person who is always willing to learn. I understand that being a CYCP means that I will always be learning from the youth, families and colleagues. One thing I am always excited about is to learn, you can never know too much.
